About A Plague Tale Innocence

A Plague Tale: Innocence is Asobo Studio's stealth-and-adventure drama set in 14th-century France, where the Black Death is rolling across the kingdom and the Inquisition is using the chaos as cover for an even more sinister hunt. You play Amicia, a young noblewoman dragged out of her sheltered life when soldiers attack her family's estate, and the central relationship of the game is between her and her younger brother Hugo, whom she barely knows because of the illness that's kept him hidden for most of his life.

The game leans heavily into atmosphere and choreographed environments. Rats are the central environmental threat — unstoppable swarms moving across villages and the open countryside, devouring anything not standing in light. You navigate around them using torches, braziers and improvised flames, with the swarms acting almost as a single fluid antagonist that the level design uses to gate progress. Combat is light and stealth-oriented, with a sling and a small set of alchemical mixtures Amicia gradually learns to brew.

Underneath the survival mechanics is a story about two siblings learning to depend on each other under conditions designed to break them. The pacing leans toward the cinematic, and the visual presentation — heavily detailed environments, ruined villages, fields of corpses — carries much of the emotional weight. As the game progresses, Hugo and the rats turn out to be connected by something larger than a chance plague outbreak, and the trust the two of them build across the chapters becomes the structural spine of the entire experience.
