About GemCraft - Chasing Shadows
GemCraft - Chasing Shadows is the long-running cult-favourite tower-defence series brought to Steam by Game in a Bottle. Instead of building towers as discrete units, you summon gems — your real weapons — and socket them into towers, traps and amplifiers depending on what the current wave demands. Combining gems creates more powerful hybrids with stacked effects: poison plus slow, chain lightning plus armor-tearing, and a long combinatorial tail that makes the lategame feel almost like a puzzle.
The campaign is structured around standing against The Forgotten, an archdemon whose endless avatars threaten to swallow the world. More than 190 stages span the main path, with multiple difficulty tiers and over 400 achievements layered on top, each awarding skill points to spend on the deep passive skill tree. Socket fragments slot into a mystical talisman for additional bonuses, devastating spells let you decimate foes or buff your own gems, and battle traits stack difficulty modifiers for bigger rewards if you can survive them.
Wave control gives the strategic layer real teeth. You can summon enemies early using wave stones for additional experience, but the early-summoned enemies are tougher than they'd otherwise be. The combat speed can be paused or fast-forwarded freely, replays of completed stages can be retried for more experience or new challenge constraints, and Endurance mode tests how long you can hold out after the main wave count is exhausted. Nine gem types with different effects ensure that even very experienced players don't immediately converge on a single optimal build.
