Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (2009)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) is Infinity Ward's direct sequel to the genre-resetting Modern Warfare, picking up the storyline immediately and escalating both the scope and the cinematics. The campaign — set against a new global threat dedicated to bringing the world to the brink of collapse — was the first video game to feature an original Hans Zimmer score, and the resulting set pieces (including the infamous "No Russian" mission) became among the most-discussed in the medium's history.

Special Ops cooperative mode debuted with this entry and remains one of its standout contributions to the franchise's structure. Built as a parallel to the single-player campaign rather than a copy of it, the mode strings together time-trial and objective-based missions across a long progression curve, with new missions unlocking as you rank up. Some entries highlight scenes from the campaign, some bring back fan-favourite missions from Call of Duty 4, and several are exclusive to Special Ops.

The multiplayer suite reshaped the online shooter market. Create-a-Class Evolved added secondary weapons (machine pistols, shotguns, handguns, launchers), riot shields, new equipment categories (throwing knives, blast shields, tactical insertion), perk upgrades, Bling for dual attachments, and the customisable Killstreaks (AC130, Sentry Gun, Predator Missile, Counter-UAV, Care Package) that became genre staples afterwards.
