About Half-Life 2 Deathmatch
Half-Life 2: Deathmatch is the multiplayer-focused companion to Half-Life 2, designed as a quick-play counterpoint to the single-player campaign. Combat is set in the Half-Life 2 universe, with the full HL2 weapon set, and the central twist is the Source engine's then-revolutionary physics — almost any environmental object can be picked up with the Gravity Gun and thrown at opponents.
The physics layer is the design's defining wrinkle. A toilet bowl, a sawblade, a radiator, a kitchen sink — all become projectiles in the right hands. Deathmatch becomes a game of resource extraction from the level itself, with the Gravity Gun as the ultimate sandbox weapon. The community has spent years discovering new ways to weaponize specific maps.
Two modes ship in the package: straight deathmatch for free-for-all combat, and Combine-versus-Resistance team play for structured opposing-faction battles. The game pulls from the same arsenal Gordon Freeman used in the campaign — crossbow, RPG, shotgun, SMG, pistol, .357 magnum, all rendered with the Source engine's then-distinctive weight and feedback. The whole package remains compact, fast, and physics-driven.
