About Lost in Random
Lost in Random is a gothic-fairy-tale action-adventure built around a single cruel premise: in the kingdom of Random, every child's twelfth birthday includes rolling a black dice that permanently determines their fate. Roll a one and live a life of struggle in Onecroft. Roll a three and end up in Threedom, a chaotic civil-war realm. Roll a six and live in luxury in the Queen's dark palace. The Queen herself wields the cursed dice that runs the whole system, and her power depends on it.
The story follows Even, a penniless girl down on her luck, whose sister has been taken by the Queen. To save her, Even joins forces with Dicey, a small and strange living dice. Together they walk Random's mysterious cobbled streets, meet its unpredictable residents, take on courageous quests through the six shadowy realms, and gradually peel back an age-old story with a modern message. The script is penned by Ryan North, the Eisner Award-winning writer of Adventure Time and The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, giving the writing a sharp wit underneath the dark fairy-tale frame.
The combat layer is genuinely original. Tactical battles play out inside giant board-game arenas, blending real-time movement with collected card abilities that are activated by dice rolls. The board itself can shift between throws, changing the rules mid-fight. Adapting your battle strategy on the fly within evolving game-board arenas is the central skill. Defying a cursed fate through a friendship with a living dice — playing the odds when the system itself wants you to lose — gives the gameplay and the story their shared central metaphor.
