About Praetorians - HD Remaster
Praetorians is the celebrated tactical real-time strategy game originally released by Pyro Studios in 2003, brought back with a high-definition remaster that preserves the core design intact. The campaign is set during the politically turbulent rise of the Roman Empire, with the protagonist working his way up through the ranks toward the throne. Three theaters of war — Egypt, Gaul, and finally the heart of Italy itself — provide distinct terrain, enemy compositions and tactical challenges across the campaign.
The game's design strips away the resource-gathering and base-building common to its contemporaries in favor of pure tactical command. Your units are what you have — you can't economically replenish them on the fly — which means every engagement matters. The Empire is defended by thousands of troops across many specialized types, each with their own special skills and individual strengths, and victory comes from learning which unit combinations counter which threats and exploiting enemy weaknesses with disciplined positioning.
The climactic challenge is the Praetorian Guard itself — the most powerful and lethal fighting force in the Empire, and the final obstacle between you and the throne. The remaster's improvements are visual rather than mechanical, keeping the original's balance and pacing intact while updating the presentation for current displays. For RTS players who never encountered the original, this is a chance to see why the game built a long-running cult following.
