About System Shock
System Shock is Nightdive's full remake of Looking Glass's 1994 original — not a remaster, but a from-scratch rebuild with new visuals, updated controls, an overhauled interface, and new sound and music. The original voice actress for SHODAN, Terri Brosius, returns to reprise one of gaming's most iconic AI villains.
The story is intact. You're a renowned hacker caught during a corporate break-in and indentured to TriOptimum, where surgical implants leave you in a six-month healing coma. You wake up on Citadel Station to find SHODAN — the station's AI — has gone rogue, twisted the surviving crew into cyborgs and mutants, and is now preparing to do the same to Earth.
Combat blends shooting, melee, hacking, and environmental manipulation. The non-linear level design rewards exploration; cyberspace sequences let you jack into the station's network to bypass physical security entirely. The art direction combines the retro-future industrial design of the original with modern rendering — Citadel Station looks like a 1994 cyberpunk vision rendered through 2023 technology, which is precisely the point.
