About Battle Brothers

Battle Brothers is a turn-based tactical RPG built around running a mercenary company through a fractured medieval-fantasy world. The old empires have turned to dust, the dead are rising, Greenskin hordes are gathering, bandits roam freely, and Nobles are preparing for war — which means anyone with coin to spare is hiring sellswords. You start small, recruit procedurally generated fighters, take contracts from settlements and Noble Houses, and slowly grow a company whose reputation reshapes how the world responds to you.

The combat layer is the heart of the game. Battles play out turn-by-turn on hex-tiled battlefields with rough terrain, elevation, and obstacles that genuinely matter. Equipment is granular — a spear works against beasts but does little against fleshless skeletons; a warhammer crushes armored bandits but ruins their armor as loot; daggers slip through gaps and preserve gear. Fatigue is the third dimension of the system: heavy armor and powerful attacks drain it quickly, and a tired soldier loses access to their best abilities long before they actually fall. Morale operates similarly, with units fleeing under pressure and enemies routing if you hit them hard enough fast enough.

The injury system is what gives the game its identity. A broken arm reduces combat skills temporarily; a broken elbow joint reduces them permanently. Collapsed lungs, bruised legs, broken knees — every permanent injury changes how a brother can be used for the rest of his career. Recruits arrive from over a dozen backgrounds (Retired Soldiers, Crusaders, Beggars, Graverobbers, Adventurous Nobles, Farmhands) each carrying their own starting gear, attribute biases, traits and event hooks. There are no fixed classes — every brother is shaped through perks, attributes and equipment into the role he's best suited for, and crises like factional wars, undead uprisings or Greenskin invasions periodically reshape what kind of company the world demands.
