About Company of Heroes
Company of Heroes is Relic Entertainment's WWII real-time strategy game, originally released in 2006 and still one of the genre's tactical high-water marks. The campaign opens with the D-Day landings at Normandy and proceeds through some of the most pivotal battles of the European theatre as players lead squads of Allied soldiers against the German war machine. The framing leans cinematic — the cost of each engagement is on the screen — but the underlying systems are built around squad-level tactics rather than the army-scale economy of older RTS games.
What set Company of Heroes apart at launch, and largely still does, is the way the environment participates in combat. Buildings can be garrisoned and reduced to rubble, walls and hedgerows actually provide directional cover, and a physics-driven destruction system means no two battles unfold the same way through the same map. Squads behave intelligently — taking cover, suppressing enemy positions, executing flanks — and individual soldier voices ground the larger strategic picture in something more granular.
The enhanced Relic engine still produces visuals and physics that are unusual for a game of its vintage, and multiplayer for two to eight players over LAN or internet provides the Axis-versus-Allies framework that the wider community has spent years stress-testing. The Legacy Edition page collects historical reviews and the full library of total conversions; this listing is the modern entry point for new players who want the campaign as Relic shipped it.
