About Darkest Dungeon

Darkest Dungeon is a challenging gothic roguelike turn-based RPG about the psychological cost of adventuring. The premise reframes the genre: you've inherited your ancestor's estate, the land is overrun with eldritch horrors, and the heroes you recruit to clear out the dungeons are flawed, traumatizable humans rather than the gleaming archetypes most RPGs feature. The question is whether you can keep them functional through the work the campaign asks them to do.

The Affliction system is the game's signature mechanic. Stress accumulates on heroes during expeditions — from combat, from environmental hazards, from witnessing horrors, from each other's behavior. Reach the breaking point and afflictions appear: paranoia, masochism, irrationality, fear, and gameplay-meaningful quirks that change how the character behaves in and out of combat. Some afflictions are permanent. Some can be removed at the Abbey or Tavern in town. All of them shape how you have to play.

Combat is innovative turn-based pitting your four-hero party against horrible monsters in lineup-based engagements where rank matters as much as health. Sixteen-plus playable hero classes — Plague Doctor, Hellion, Leper, Crusader, Highwayman and many more — each fill specific tactical positions and synergize differently with each other. The hand-drawn gothic crowquill art style and the narration (a voice you'll never forget) carry the atmosphere from menu to credits.

Classic CRPG and roguelike features include character permadeath, procedural dungeons, incredible replay variability, and a town that gradually rebuilds as you push back the corruption. Camping between fights heals wounds or delivers inspiring speeches that reduce stress. The whole experience is brutal but never unfair — the difficulty is structural, not arbitrary, and the long-term meta of choosing which heroes to save, which to sacrifice, and how to manage the estate's psychic toll is what made it one of the most influential indie RPGs of its era.
