About Rift Wizard
Rift Wizard is a turn-based fantasy roguelike from Hot Pot Games that pushes the genre toward strategy and away from randomness. You play an immortal amnesiac wizard rebuilding his spellbook across 25 procedurally generated levels, each filled with challenges that test build construction and tactical thinking.
The design philosophy is explicit: low randomness, high player agency. Most variability comes from level layout and enemy composition; player turns are deterministic, and the game rewards careful play over lucky rolls. The developer compares the experience to a board game more than to a traditional CRPG.
The spellbook system is the heart of the experience. 100+ spells and passive skills feed deep build synergies — chaining interactions between status effects, summons, terrain, and damage types is where the depth lives. There's a small narrative spine (avenge yourself on a rival wizard) but no extensive plot or open-world exploration. Just battles and buildcraft.
Monsters are diverse and meaningfully varied, each requiring different strategic responses. High difficulty, permadeath, limited resources, and clean 1990s retro RPG aesthetics. Influences include NetHack, DCSS, Brogue, and Tales of Maj'Eyal, but the design pushes further toward combat-focused tactical puzzling than any of those.
