From The Darkness

From the Darkness is a short first-person psychological horror designed around dread rather than action. The setup is grounded — the protagonist has come to his recently deceased grandfather's old Soviet-era apartment to collect an old family album — and most of the game is spent simply walking through the apartment, exploring rooms, opening drawers, and gradually realizing that whatever lives in the dark here has been waiting for someone to arrive.

The apartment itself does most of the work. Period-accurate Soviet décor — wallpaper patterns, furniture, the particular weight of late-Soviet domestic spaces — gives the setting a specificity most horror games miss. As the visit progresses, strange events accumulate in increments: small displacements, sounds that shouldn't be in an empty apartment, lights that behave wrong. The protagonist's goal is simply to leave alive, but the resolution requires confronting the thing in the dark face to face rather than escaping it.

The game runs about an hour, which is the right length for the kind of atmosphere it sustains. The developer's warning that the game contains flashes of light capable of triggering epileptic seizures is worth taking seriously. The pacing favors quiet builds and long stretches of unease over jump scares, though the climax delivers what the title promises.
