About Monkey Island 2 Special Edition LeChuck's Revenge
Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge is LucasArts' 2010 remaster of Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman's 1991 follow-up to The Secret of Monkey Island, widely considered one of the high points of the studio's adventure-game era. Guybrush Threepwood — having seemingly defeated LeChuck in the first game — sets his sights on the legendary treasure of Big Whoop, only for the ghost pirate to return in zombie form, considerably angrier than before.
The special edition rebuilds the visual layer in hand-drawn high definition while preserving the original game's puzzle structure and writing intact. A scene-for-scene hot-swap lets you toggle between the new presentation and the original 1991 graphics at any moment, which preserves the option to play the game as it shipped while still enjoying the upgraded version most of the time. The musical score has been re-mastered and re-recorded with live instruments, and full voice acting from the original Monkey Island franchise cast covers the entire script in both modes.
New systems extend what the original had. Direct character control sits alongside the classic point-and-click interface; interactive object highlighting helps with the hidden-item puzzles; an in-game hint system gives stuck players a way forward without spoiling. The Special Edition adds developer commentary from Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman with select-scene anecdotes about the original development, plus a behind-the-scenes art viewer for never-before-seen artwork from both the Classic and Special Edition versions. Voodoo dolls, spitting contests, amusement parks and the eventual reckoning with LeChuck remain at the centre of the experience.
