About Grim Fandango Remastered
Grim Fandango is set entirely in the Aztec-inflected Land of the Dead, where newly departed souls work off a four-year journey to their final rest. Manny Calavera, the protagonist, is a travel agent at the Department of Death, selling luxury packages on commission to the recently deceased. The plot opens with him realizing the good clients are being routed away from him on purpose, and unspools from there into a conspiracy that touches every layer of the underworld bureaucracy.
The tone is the unusual part. Tim Schafer's script combines hard-boiled film-noir cadence with Mexican Día de Muertos iconography, building a world that's funny and melancholic in equal measure. It won GameSpot's Game of the Year at original launch and has held its reputation as one of the high-water marks of the adventure genre in the years since.
The remaster keeps the original story and puzzles intact while rebuilding the presentation around modern hardware. Character textures are repainted in high resolution, dynamic lighting replaces the original baked-in passes, and the score has been re-recorded with a full live orchestra rather than the synthesized version of 1998. The package includes more than two hours of new developer commentary from Schafer and the original team, plus a built-in concept-art browser.
