About Pajama Sam No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside
Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside is the first entry in Humongous Entertainment's Pajama Sam series, originally released in 1996 and still one of the most beloved children's point-and-click adventures of its era. Sam, an ordinary kid, gets fed up with his fear of the dark, puts on his red cape, transforms into the self-styled "world's youngest superhero" Pajama Sam, and ventures into his closet to confront Darkness as a personal enemy.
The gameplay is classic Humongous adventure design — exploration, light puzzles, item collection and conversations with a cast of strange but friendly characters, including King the mine car and Otto the boat, who help Sam navigate the surprisingly large land of darkness. The pedagogy is woven cleanly into the design: the game encourages critical thinking, listening, memory exercises and modelling of good social behaviour, all in the context of a cartoon-quality adventure where the kid is genuinely calling the shots.
One of the series' signature design choices was rotating content across sessions — important objects and certain plot elements show up in different locations between playthroughs, so the second pass through doesn't simply replay the first. The Steam release uses ScummVM (released under GNU GPL v2) for compatibility across Windows, Mac and Linux, and preserves the original presentation and writing intact for both nostalgic adults and the children the game was originally aimed at.
