About Quake II

Quake II is id Software's 1997 follow-up to the original Quake, set in a military-sci-fi war between humanity and the alien Strogg, and the Steam package now bundles both the original executable and the enhanced 2023 re-release together with most of the historically separate add-ons. The enhanced version layers on up-to-4K and widescreen support, improved enemy models and animations, restored AI behaviours, dynamic and coloured lighting, anti-aliasing, depth of field, and Sonic Mayhem's original heavy rock soundtrack remastered.

The bundle includes both original mission packs. The Reckoning is a commando-force infiltration of an industrial Strogg site, with eighteen campaign levels and seven deathmatch maps across waterways, air ducts, mutant-infested canyons and a hijacked alien craft. Ground Zero, fifteen campaign levels and fourteen deathmatch maps, sends you to destroy the Strogg's Gravity Well weapon while the surrounding fleet is trapped in orbit. Quake II 64 is included as a separate release with its own nineteen campaign levels, ten deathmatch maps and an alternate soundtrack.

Call of the Machine is a brand-new campaign by MachineGames built specifically for this re-release: twenty-eight new levels and an additional deathmatch map, structured around a Strogg superweapon called the Machine capable of collapsing reality itself. Multiplayer covers four-player online or local split-screen co-op for the campaigns plus competitive matches up to sixteen players online, with crossplay between PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, bot support for offline and online modes, and the option to keep playing the untouched, fully-moddable original version whenever you'd rather.
