About Scanner Sombre

Scanner Sombre is a 3D cave-exploration horror game from Introversion Software, the studio behind Uplink, Defcon, Darwinia and Prison Architect. The premise is starkly simple: you wake in absolute darkness, recover a LIDAR scanner from the floor of the chamber you find yourself in, and proceed into a vast underground network of caves where the silence is broken only by echoes and hesitant footsteps. Your sole tool against the dark is the scanner itself.

The LIDAR mechanic is the game's defining feature. Casting beams of light into the abyss progressively builds up a point-cloud map of the surrounding environment, with color-coded depth cues showing how close or distant each point is. The result is a visually striking, deliberately inhuman aesthetic — vibrant rainbow point clouds inspired by industrial LIDAR scans — that turns each cavern into a hand-painted abstract environment. The scanner is also your only defense, since the unseen unknown is what keeps you on edge throughout.

The story unfolds subtly through the environment. Hints of forgotten histories, strange symbols and eerie remnants suggest a deeper, darker narrative the deeper you go, and each step forward invites you to unravel the mystery bit by bit. Inspired by Gone Home and Dear Esther, Scanner Sombre is much shorter than typical horror games and far more contemplative than its setup suggests, with the dread emerging from atmosphere and isolation rather than direct threats. The shadows that twist as you scan deeper are doing real work.
