About SimplePlanes
SimplePlanes is a build-an-aircraft sandbox built around a simple promise: snap parts together to make a plane, then climb into the cockpit and find out whether it flies. The building system covers airplane bodies, engines for thrust, and wing sections that can be designed by hand to balance lift and drag the way you want them. Every decision you make during construction directly affects flight behavior afterward.
The flight model is the technical centerpiece. Weight distribution, thrust, lift and drag are continuously calculated while flying. Parts can break off in spectacular fashion if you over-stress them — pull too hard a turn and a wing might shear off in mid-air — and the game keeps simulating the wreckage so you can keep flying with a missing wing if you've got the skills. It's flight simulation pulled all the way into the granular detail without losing arcade accessibility.
Challenges keep solo play structured. Land on aircraft carriers. Escort bombers. Dodge surface-to-air missiles. Race through courses. The mode is deep enough that mastery of specific challenges takes hours, and player creations can attempt the same scenarios with wildly different designs. Sandbox mode strips away the constraints and lets you build anything from old WW2 bombers to next-generation fighters to outright sci-fi spacecraft.
The community is the long-tail strength. Over 100,000 player-designed aircraft are available to download for free from the community workshop, ranging from historically accurate replicas to creative impossibilities. Players can upload their own designs and rise through the ranks from bronze builder to gold level. Modding is fully supported through a Unity-based toolkit, letting players design their own parts and environments. A separate SimplePlanes VR release exists for VR-native play; buying both on Steam enables VR mode in SimplePlanes directly.
