About Vangers
Vangers is a 1998 cult sandbox game from Russian studio K-D Lab, a genuine outlier in the medium's history. Categorising it is famously difficult — "racing-RPG-adventure-survival" is the rough shape, but the game's atmosphere is closer to a vivid alien dream than to any straightforward genre.
The setting is the far future of humanity, where a clash with another intelligent race has produced a new universe full of strange creatures and twisted technology. Players are Vangers — mercenary murderers, escaped experiment subjects, masters of the roads — driving customisable mechos (vehicles) across a chain of warped worlds linked by tunnels.
Gameplay covers vehicle combat, race-driving, NPC trading, quest-running, and exploration across these worlds. The Lost Chain of Worlds is cursed, the Larvae have begun boring through eternity, and the mechos command their own slaves — the in-game lore is exactly as opaque as that sentence suggests, and figuring out what's actually going on is a substantial part of the experience.
The game has been preserved as freeware by the developer for years and re-released through Steam with modern compatibility. Visually, mechanically, and tonally it's still unlike anything else in the medium. A landmark of 90s Eastern European game design.
