About Wandering Sword
Wandering Sword is a Wuxia RPG built around traditional Chinese martial arts and the pugilistic-world setting most of the genre is anchored in. You play a young swordsman caught in a deadly feud and barely escape. The escape sets you on the path of pursuing the highest form of martial arts, exploring an ancient-China-inspired world, and becoming the great hero you were always destined to be.
The visual approach is distinctive. The game uses Unreal Engine 4 to render 3D landscapes and then layers traditional pixel-art sprites on top, blending the charm of classic pixel-based martial-arts games with the immersive depth of modern 3D environments. Over 75 locations across five diverse regions echo the richness of ancient China — bustling towns, scenic mountains, picturesque rivers, dangerous lairs, treacherous terrain. The aesthetic is genuinely unusual in execution.
The combat system operates on a tiled board and lets you switch freely between turn-based and real-time modes. Turn-based mode caters to traditional RPG pacing for players who want to think through every action. Real-time mode rewards quick reflexes for players who prefer flow. Both are full implementations rather than concessions, and switching between them mid-engagement is supported.
The martial-arts depth runs across hundreds of techniques and weapon styles. Cultivate energy through meridian points. Gain expertise in both external (physical) and internal (chi-based) forms. Build relationships with NPCs, recruit up to fourteen unique martial artists with their own distinctive abilities, and even potentially find love in the intricate world of factions and feuds. Multiple endings shaped by your choices, plus a long roster of side quests supplementing the main story, deliver over 20 hours of campaign with strong replay value across different paths.
