About Wingspan
Wingspan is the officially licensed digital adaptation of Elizabeth Hargrave and Stonemaier Games' Wingspan board game — winner of the 2019 Kennerspiel des Jahres and one of the most-discussed strategy boardgames of the last decade. You play a bird enthusiast — researcher, ornithologist, watcher, collector — competing with other enthusiasts to discover and attract the best birds to your network of wildlife preserves across a limited number of turns.
The core mechanic is engine-building. Each bird you play extends a chain of powerful combinations in one of your three habitats — forest, grassland or wetland — with each habitat focused on a key aspect of your preserve's growth: gathering food, laying eggs, drawing cards. Many of the 170 unique birds carry powers modelled on real-life behaviour: hawks hunt, pelicans fish, geese form flocks. The deck-building engine gradually emerges as you stack birds whose abilities trigger each other in productive ways.
The digital adaptation supports single-player play against AI opponents and multiplayer for up to five players across local and online modes. Each bird is animated and accompanied by its real-life sound recording, which gives the game a quietly educational dimension — players legitimately come away knowing more about the birds whose cards they kept playing. Multiple scoring axes — birds in habitats, bonus cards earned at game start, end-of-round goals — keep the strategic surface broad enough that the same opening hand can be played productively in several different directions.
