About Derail Valley
Derail Valley is an open-world train simulator built from the ground up for both flat-screen PC and virtual reality. The map covers 256 square kilometres of seamless terrain — forests, valleys, rivers, towns, industrial sites — connected by an extensive rail network you can drive freely, with no level transitions or invisible walls. Day and night roll across the world in real time, weather shifts between sun, fog and rain, and you can step out of any cab and walk wherever your legs will take you.
The career layer is built around economic operations rather than scripted missions. More than eighty cargo types feed into a dynamic industrial chain, with deliveries generated procedurally between industries and stations, and a licensing system that gates access to bigger engines and more lucrative contracts. Efficient driving — managing fuel, keeping wear low, executing clean coupling and shunting — translates directly into profit, and a sandbox mode strips out the economy if you'd rather just drive.
Six steam and diesel locomotive classes are modelled with their full quirks, transmission types, and tactile control sets, alongside extra vehicles and a separate hobby loop of finding derelict locomotive variants in the world, restoring them, and customising them with installable gadgets like digital speedometers, clinometers and ambient lights. Failures aren't abstracted away — derailments, blown traction motors, boiler explosions, HAZMAT incidents and brake failures all play out with real consequences, and tutorials plus a comprehensive manual cover the rest.
