Over 150 miles of track across three included routes, full daytime timetables for each, and a wide range of train services from express passenger to freight and rescue stock make the game one of the most thorough simulators of its specific historical niche.

The driving experience is genuinely customizable. Full manual control covers shifting gears on the railcars with manual gearboxes, with optional helpful HUD guides for newcomers. A simple-controls mode reduces driving to two-key operation for casual play. Supported input devices range from keyboard and mouse to gamepads, joysticks, HOTAS and the dedicated RailDriver controller, with full interactive in-cab controls for players who prefer the immersive cab-perspective approach. Computer-driven AI options let you hand the controls over and ride along as observer or switch between active services to see different parts of the timetable unfold.

The physics simulation runs unusually deep. Individual components of the transmission are modeled to ensure realistic transmission behavior, and each vehicle's suspension is simulated separately so trains bounce and sway over uneven trackwork. Most sound effects are authentic recordings from the real trains. AI trains occasionally make human-like mistakes — running late, misjudging braking at stations — which means signal states can differ between runs of the same service. Train, route and timetable editors plus Steam Workshop integration support extensive community content, with additional trains, routes and timetables available beyond the included three lines.
