About FATAL FRAME PROJECT ZERO Mask of the Lunar Eclipse
Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is the fourth main entry in the Fatal Frame / Project Zero franchise, originally released in Japan in 2008 and now remastered with upgraded graphics for modern platforms. The story follows a group of children who mysteriously disappeared during a festival on Rogetsu Isle years ago. They were eventually found, but with no memory of what happened to them. Now grown into teenagers, the girls return to the island — and the game begins as they confront whatever it was that took them.
The Camera Obscura returns as the central tool. The old camera has the power to repel vengeful ghosts and seal away their power by photographing them — line a spirit up through the viewfinder, take the shot, inflict damage. Stronger lenses and different films can be equipped to capture more dangerous spirits, and the camera also serves as the investigative tool that reveals keys, clues and details otherwise invisible to ordinary sight. The girls explore dimly lit Western-style mansions and abandoned hospitals on the island, navigating by moonlight and the faint beam of a flashlight, piecing together newspaper articles and notes to recover what they've lost.
The remaster's improvements run across in-game movies, character models and platform-specific graphics enhancements. Shadow rendering and flashlight beams have been refined for more realistic horror, which matters in a game built almost entirely around what you can't quite see. A new Snap Mode lets players pose characters and ghosts to create staged shots, with the occasional accidental capture of unexpected spirits as a bonus. New costumes have been added to the lineup and some of the original costumes have been adjusted, giving veterans of the original release new ways to revisit familiar ground.
