About Fears to Fathom - Ironbark Lookout
Fears to Fathom: Ironbark Lookout is the fourth episode in the anthology series Rayll developed around the premise that each entry is a short story narrated by someone who survived something. Jack Nelson, a 24-year-old fire lookout, transfers to a new outpost in Ironbark State Park, settles into his new home, and immediately can't shake the feeling that something is wrong.
The gameplay is first-person narrative walking simulator with exploration, driving, and conversation mechanics. The presentation runs in VHS film aesthetic — visible video grain, deliberate analog distortion, the texture of a tape recording rather than a digital one. Receiving texts from NPCs and player voice activity (where supported) deepen the immersion.
The atmosphere does the heavy lifting. Photo-realistic environments contrast with the deliberately degraded video filter, producing the unsettling effect the series has refined across its prior entries. Jack survived because he made the right choices, the framing reminds you — implying that wrong choices were available, and that the player is being asked to make them correctly. The session is short, the dread is sustained throughout, and the survivor's voice is what carries the narrative home.
