About Insurgency
Insurgency is a multiplayer and cooperative tactical FPS built on the Source engine and grew directly out of the award-winning Source mod of the same name. The gameplay sits between one-life shooters like Counter-Strike and longer-form action experiences — highly competitive, unforgivingly lethal, and focused on close-quarters firefights where positioning, communication and weapon control matter more than reflexes alone.
Weapon design supports the realism focus. Over 40 weapons ship with numerous attachments, no crosshair on the HUD, and a free-aim system where the weapon doesn't always point exactly where the camera looks. Suppression effects shake your screen when bullets come close. Squad-based player classes are role-customizable and asymmetric depending on which side you're playing — Security or Insurgents have access to different equipment.
The map roster covers 16 environments playable in day and night versions, with settings spanning the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia. Seven multiplayer game modes support up to 32 players each, with focus on territorial control, weapon-cache destruction, and high-value target escort. Modes like Push, Firefight, Skirmish, Occupy, Ambush, Strike, Infiltrate, Flashpoint and Elimination each present specific scenarios with distinct rules about respawns and objectives.
Five cooperative game modes — Checkpoint, Hunt, Survival, Outpost and Conquer — let you and your friends team up against AI enemies for mission-based or wave-defense gameplay. A 3D VOIP system lets friendly and enemy players within proximity hear each other. The Insurgency SDK and Steam Workshop integration support custom maps and content. Free content updates have continued post-launch with new weapons, modes, maps and features.
