About Voodoo Detective
Voodoo Detective is a hand-drawn point-and-click adventure with deep Monkey Island DNA — both in its tone and in the talent that put it together. The setting is Zo Wanga Isle, specifically the small town of New Ginen, where a rich indigenous Voodoo culture has been steadily overrun by chain stores and tourist traffic. The collision between local color and colonial corruption is the backdrop the mystery unfolds against, and the script treats both with more care than the genre typically manages.
The case kicks off when a mysterious woman with no past walks in. The drama spreads outward from there until the threads of reality itself start to unravel. The protagonist — Voodoo Detective in fedora and trench coat — has to navigate dirty secrets, escalating supernatural complications, and the constant background tension of an island that may not survive its current trajectory. The whimsy and intrigue balance against each other carefully across the campaign.
The production credits are unusually loaded for an indie point-and-click. Voice talent draws from games and films including Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Final Fantasy, Fallout, Diablo, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Star Trek, Austin Powers and others. The soundtrack is composed by Peter McConnell himself — the composer of Grim Fandango, Monkey Island and Psychonauts — recorded with live instruments. Hand-drawn backgrounds, animations and UI tie the whole presentation together in a register that genuinely earns the Monkey Island comparison rather than just gesturing at it.
