About Kujlevka
Kujlevka is set in 1992 Russia, in a forgotten village whose primary problems were already the post-Soviet financial crisis and rising crime rates before a flying saucer crashed into the local chairman's house. You play the collective farm's headmaster, and the unwanted responsibility of filtering visitors before they meet the aliens falls on you. The saucer's occupants are in no hurry to interact with humans; they'd rather observe steadily.
The game uses the absurdity of its premise to do real cultural work. Kujlevka explores life in a post-Soviet rural community during one of the most disorienting periods of Russian history, with the alien encounter sitting alongside the financial collapse and political upheaval as just another challenge to navigate. Your choices about who meets the aliens and what they're told shape the course of history at the local and (potentially) global scale.
The presentation goes beyond static dialog. Mesmerizing atmospheric scenes carry the protagonist's dreams, deepening the texture of village life beyond the immediate alien-contact narrative. The game frames its tone as melancholic and observational — these are the aliens that landed in Russia, and this is what their visit looks like from inside a struggling kolkhoz.
