About Near Death

Near Death sets up a survival scenario unusually focused on a single antagonist: the continent of Antarctica. Your plane has gone down near Sutro Station, an abandoned polar research facility, and rescue is impossible in the current conditions — temperatures 100 degrees below zero, polar night plunging the world into darkness, and a blizzard that never meaningfully eases. There are no zombies here, no aliens, no monsters. The cold is enough.

The game describes itself as not a survival game but a game about surviving. The distinction matters. Rather than crafting and base-building, the moment-to-moment loop is about reclaiming the abandoned station from the elements — sealing the buildings, restoring power room by room, scavenging the supplies left behind by the station's last occupants, and slowly establishing pockets of warmth where you can stay alive long enough to plan the next move. Light trails help you find your way back through zero-visibility whiteouts; melted ice clears frozen obstacles to deeper parts of the base; a personal heater creates the small bubble of warmth you need to think.

The dynamic weather system layers snow, wind, temperature and lighting into a continuous spectrum of Antarctic conditions, from full whiteouts that drop visibility to a few feet to brief moments of clarity where you can finally see the layout of the base. A real-time temperature simulation freezes and thaws individual rooms based on exposure, power supply, and any makeshift repairs you've made — meaning the station itself behaves like a living system you're trying to keep alive alongside yourself. The original score of ambient music carries most of the emotional weight.
