About Niche - a genetics survival game
Niche is a fresh blend of turn-based strategy, simulation, and roguelike elements. You shape your own species of cat/fox/bear/dog-like animals based on real genetics, keeping them alive against hungry predators, climate change, and spreading sickness. If the species goes extinct, the game is lost and your evolution starts anew.
The breeding system is based on real genetics, with over 100 genes shaping your species. Procedurally generated worlds and animals ensure each playthrough differs. Five biomes (each with different predators, prey, and flora) offer environmental challenges to adapt against. The game mechanics are inspired by population genetics including dominant-recessive and co-dominant inheritance.
The educational layer is integrated into gameplay rather than imposed. The five pillars of population genetics (genetic drift, gene flow, mutation, natural selection, sexual selection) all influence outcomes, creating the effect of learning by playing. Influenced by Spore, Don't Starve, the Creatures series, and Warrior Cats.
