Serious Sam 3: BFE is set as a prequel to Serious Sam: The First Encounter, dropping the player into Earth's final desperate struggle against Mental's invading legions. The setting is a near-future Egypt where shattered modern cities sit alongside crumbling ancient temples, and the entire game is constructed around the franchise's commitment to old-school first-person shooter design: no cover systems, no peeking, no slow tactical clearing — hold the trigger or be overrun.

The enemy roster keeps the franchise's signature pace. Headless Kamikazes, Gnaars and Sirian Werebulls return alongside new arrivals like the rumbling Scrapjack and the towering Khnum, all engineered to flood arenas in numbers that demand constant movement and target prioritization. The weapon set is similarly maximalist — scoped assault rifles, double-barreled shotguns, explosive automatic shotguns, miniguns, and a flaming cannonball barrage — and Sam carries the entire arsenal at once with no slot restrictions. Brutal melee finishers let you rip out a Gnaar's eye, twist off a Scrapjack's face, or snap an Arachnoid Hatchling's neck for instant kills when ammo runs short.

Multiplayer is unusually generous. 16-player online co-op covers 12 single-player levels across Standard, Classic, Coin-Op, Beast Hunt and Team Beast Hunt modes. Survival modes work solo or in versus team configurations. Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Last Man Standing, Instant Kill and My Burden round out the competitive options. Local split-screen handles up to four players on one screen with multiple keyboard and mouse support, and Serious Editor 3.5 ships free with Steam Workshop for mod content.
