Terraformers: First Steps on Mars is a free standalone version of the full Terraformers game, focused on humanity's first expedition. Earth has dispatched a team to assess the viability of human settlement, with the long-term objective of terraforming the planet and spreading life across its surface.

You choose your leaders, send them on assessments, explore the planet, and exploit local resources to develop your first outposts into larger settlements. The terraforming arc that defines the full game is glimpsed but not pursued at scale here; this prologue concentrates on the colony-building loop that comes first.

Maintaining a decent living standard for your people is the recurring constraint. Without their support, the colony stalls, and the first steps stop short of becoming actual cities.
