About The Beginner's Guide

The Beginner's Guide is Davey Wreden's follow-up to The Stanley Parable, working in a register completely different from the meta-comedy that established his reputation. The game lasts about an hour and a half, has no traditional mechanics, no goals or objectives — instead it tells the story of a person struggling to deal with something they do not understand, told through the framing device of a guided tour through another developer's work.

The metafictional premise is the entire experience. Davey Wreden, narrating as himself, takes the player through the games of his old friend Coda — a series of small, often unfinished, often melancholic experimental projects — providing his interpretations and commentary as you walk through them. The implicit question is why Coda makes the bizarre games he makes, and what understanding his work might reveal about him as a person. As the walkthrough continues, the narrator's relationship to the material being shown gradually shifts in ways that recontextualize everything that came before.

The Beginner's Guide is the kind of game that resists detailed description without spoiling its emotional architecture. It's about the line between an artist and their work, about the assumptions critics and friends make when interpreting creative output, and about what happens when interpretive frameworks reveal more about the interpreter than about the subject. The game runs short, asks nothing of the player except attention, and tends to provoke long conversations afterward.
