Unravel

Unravel introduces Yarny, a small character made from a single thread of red yarn that physically unravels as he moves. Yarny's body is the central mechanic — you can extend the thread to swing across gaps, lasso environmental objects, hitch a ride on a flying kite, or use yarn to manipulate physics-based puzzles in ways no other platformer character can manage. If the thread runs out, you have to find more.

The environment is the headline aesthetic. Inspired by the breath-taking landscapes of Northern Scandinavia, the game's settings are forests, lakeshores, snowy fields, summer gardens, and other natural environments rendered with painterly attention to light and texture. The dangers nature has in store — predators, falling logs, treacherous water — sit alongside the beauty as honest threats.

The underlying story is told entirely without words. Yarny represents the ties that bind loved ones together, and his journey is to reconnect the long-lost memories of a family across the locations the game traces. Photographs scattered through the levels gradually fill in pieces of the broader emotional narrative. The result is a heartfelt experience about love, hope, and the journey of life, communicated entirely through visual storytelling and the small physical drama of a yarn-thread character moving through landscapes.
