About Yoku's Island Express

Yoku's Island Express is the rare game where the elevator pitch is also the most accurate one available: it's an open-world metroidvania where every form of movement runs through pinball flippers. Yoku, a small dung beetle freshly appointed as Mokumana Island's postmaster, is permanently strapped to a round ball, and getting him anywhere uphill means flipping him through a network of bumpers, ramps, gates and chutes embedded in the island's geometry.

The metroidvania scaffolding is intact underneath the pinball: a single contiguous map covers tropical beaches, jungle, snow-capped mountains, hot springs and underground caves; new abilities — a vacuum that handles explosive slugs, a noisemaker that wakes the right sleeping villagers — open up areas you'd otherwise be locked out of. Side quests branch off the main route, characters have their own stories, and boss fights resolve as oversized pinball tables where Yoku himself is the ball.

Visually the game is hand-painted by a small team of industry veterans, and the art is doing a lot of the work — every screen is a self-contained illustration that happens to also be a playable pinball board. Underneath the soft tone there's an actual ancient god trapped in a restless sleep and an island slowly being shaken apart by its nightmares, but most of the time you're rebuilding the post office one parcel at a time.
