About ABZU

ABZÛ — the title is from old Sumerian, AB meaning water and ZÛ meaning to know — is a wordless underwater adventure from the art director behind Journey and Flower. The Diver descends through a layered ocean world, performing fluid acrobatic swimming, encountering hundreds of unique species modeled on real ocean creatures, and gradually piecing together what happened in the depths long before her arrival.

The ecosystem is the game's signature achievement. Schools of thousands of fish respond procedurally to the player, to each other and to predators — drift through a school and it flows around you in ways that look genuinely alive rather than canned. Each aquatic environment models a distinct ocean ecosystem with unprecedented detail for the era, and the experience of swimming among ten thousand individually responsive fish is what most players remember about the game years later.

The descent is also a story, told without words. Epic seascapes lead toward ancient secrets buried in the deepest sections of the ocean, and dangers lurk in the depths in shapes that the game lets the player discover rather than explaining. The pacing alternates between meditative exploration and moments of tension that earn their weight precisely because the ocean above was so calm.

ABZÛ is short, complete, and built around the kind of emotional experience games rarely attempt — the dream of diving, made interactive without dragging it into mechanics-heavy survival systems. It's intentionally closer to a meditation than to a conventional adventure game, and the craft underneath supports the intent fully.
