About Pharaoh + Cleopatra
Pharaoh + Cleopatra is the bundled release of one of the most beloved historical city-builders ever made, packaging the original Pharaoh together with its Cleopatra: Queen of the Nile expansion. Made by the team behind Caesar III, the game immerses players in Ancient Egypt across an enormous historical span — from the age of the great pyramids through to the final years of the New Kingdom — with a level of attention to period-accurate detail that is still cited by genre fans today.
The simulation runs much deeper than typical city-builders. Farming uses a model based on the actual flooding of the Nile, with the river's unpredictable annual floods determining what land can be cultivated and when. Trade routes connect distant cities, religious systems require attention to multiple gods, and giant monuments — the Sphinx, the lighthouse and library of Alexandria, the pyramids themselves — are assembled stone by stone over long stretches of game time. A unique dynastic progression layers your rule across generations, with your bloodline eventually producing a Pharaoh if your stewardship has been good enough.
Management failure has real consequences. Mismanaged cities burn, are pillaged, or collapse into economic ruin, with the player watching their work undone if they don't pay attention. Naval warfare and battles against invading forces add a military layer to the otherwise economic gameplay. The extensive in-game help section explains game mechanics thoroughly and also contains interesting facts and trivia about life in Ancient Egypt — the game is openly designed to teach as well as challenge, and the City Construction Kit lets players build the perfect Egyptian city of their imagination outside of campaign constraints.
