About Samorost 3

Samorost 3 is the largest game in Amanita Design's Samorost series and a loose continuation of the original two Samorost games. The protagonist — the curious space gnome from the previous entries — discovers a magic flute that grants him the power to travel between worlds, and uses it to set out across the cosmos in search of where the flute came from. The journey covers nine unique planets, each with their own ecosystems, inhabitants and puzzles.

The gameplay is the studio's signature point-and-click exploration. Every screen is a small contained scene that hides a puzzle, a creature, or a piece of the larger story. Solutions tend to be tactile and observational rather than logical-deduction-heavy — try things, watch what reacts, learn the world's rules through small experiments. The flute itself is one of the central tools, used to communicate with creatures who respond to specific melodies.

The presentation is what the studio is famous for. Every environment is hand-painted, every character is hand-animated, and the sound design uses recorded organic noises mixed with the studio's distinctive ambient music. Nine worlds means nine distinct visual identities and nine distinct ecosystems of creatures and plants to interact with, each rendered with the kind of detail that rewards close looking.

This is Amanita's most ambitious project to date — longer, denser and visually richer than Machinarium or Botanicula. The story is told largely without dialogue, in the studio's usual minimalist way, but the emotional arc lands clearly enough that the wordlessness reads as confidence rather than restraint. Samorost 3 is the kind of game that you put on for an hour and end up unable to put down for four.
