About SHINOBI NON GRATA
SHINOBI NON GRATA is a hardcore 2D ninja action platformer in the hyper-retro pixel-art style that NES-era classics like Ninja Gaiden popularised. Released in 1838 Japan during the Tenpō era, the story follows Kaina, a descendant of the demon-hunting Fuuma shinobi clan, against the Oboro Ittō clan and their demon allies plotting to overthrow the bakufu government.
Kaina carries seven shinobi weapons, with the sword Murasame as the central tool. Shuriken, kusarigama, and the electrical "Elekiter" device handle the tighter spots, with each weapon adapted to different enemy types and traversal challenges.
Levels span an abandoned shrine, a valley of ghosts, a ninja mansion, and culminate in a boss encounter against the clan leader Genba Kisaragi. The platforming demands precision; the combat doesn't grant much room for error. Genre veterans will recognise the rhythm — short, dense levels, punishing enemy placement, classic instakill traps.
The visual style is committed to its NES-era inspiration: tight palette, sprite-based animation, and screen layouts that recall the Famicom era. A small focused tribute that takes seriously what made the original ninja platformers great.
