About Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death

Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death takes inspiration from blockbuster action films, comic book heroes and over-the-top action games, all collapsed into a single relentlessly high-octane third-person hack-and-slash experience. The story is committed to its register from the first line: no-nonsense hero Marlow crash-lands in Central America, becomes magically bound to an ancient Mayan Death Mask that hasn't had anyone to talk to in 2,000 years, and discovers an industrial evil that needs defeating immediately. His sweetheart has been abducted. The bad guys are making up their own rules. Only one man can judge them and execute the sentence.

The combat layer leans hard on combos, magical abilities and cinematic spectacle. Stacks of awesome combos and magic abilities cut down hundreds of enemies in single encounters. Mighty weapons of destruction can be deployed at peak moments. The slow-motion leaping out of huge explosions is a recurring set-piece. The mask itself contributes commentary throughout, giving the otherwise solo protagonist a wisecracking 2,000-year-old supernatural partner whose interjections shape the tone considerably.

The environments cycle through Mayan temples, towering valleys and monstrous industrial machinery, with every set-piece pushing toward another exotic and danger-filled location. The pacing favors momentum over depth — the game's stated mission is to deliver the kind of relentless action that summer blockbusters chase but rarely sustain at length. Players who want intricate combat mechanics will find better options elsewhere; players who want over-the-top cinematic mayhem with a Mayan death-mask sidekick are exactly the audience the game targets.
