About Ukraine War Stories
Ukraine War Stories is a collection of visual novels about the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, set in the war's early months. You are never a fighter here, only a survivor, a civilian trapped on occupied territory, tasked with keeping yourself and your loved ones alive and eventually escaping to safety, sometimes at the cost of difficult sacrifices.
Three interactive stories follow some of the first towns struck by the invasion. In Hostomel, a retired aviation engineer named Oleksiy Borisov manages survival resources and the emotional needs of his group. In Bucha, siblings Yarik and Vika Kravchenko are stuck under a brutal month-long occupation while their mother serves as a medic defending Kyiv. In Mariupol, the surgeon Dima Kornienko fights to keep a hospital running through one of the war's bloodiest sieges, weighing his staff's readiness against his own mental state.
Every story is a dramatization of eyewitness accounts and real events recorded in those areas, with text-based gameplay set to music and illustrations built from authentic war photographs. The game was made by a small team working from their office in Kyiv during wartime, with one member having survived the occupation of Bucha himself, and it is released completely free, with the stated goal of sharing these experiences with a worldwide audience rather than profiting from them.
