About The Darkside Detective

The Darkside Detective is Spooky Doorway's pixel-art point-and-click adventure, set in Twin Lakes City — a small American town with what the game describes as more cult activity, demonic squatters and occult disturbances than the local authorities particularly want to acknowledge. Detective Francis McQueen, the lead investigator of the criminally underfunded Darkside Division, and his sidekick Officer Patrick Dooley handle whatever the rest of the precinct refuses to engage with.

The complete Season One collection covers six bizarre cases ranging from the seriously paranormal to the deeply absurd. Flesh-hungry tentacles, mafian zombies, the occasional missing sock — the casework spans the entire spectrum of what a divisional detective in this kind of town has to handle. Each case is structured as a self-contained micro-adventure: a specific location, a small cast of suspects, a particular paranormal phenomenon, and a clear resolution before moving to the next case.

The writing is the central asset. Spooky Doorway's particular brand of dry, character-driven humour carries the entire experience — McQueen is a tired and competent professional; Dooley is enthusiastic but not always quite present; the suspects and witnesses range from helpful to alarmingly committed to whatever cult they've fallen in with. The puzzles are conventional point-and-click chains, but the consistent tone and the chapter-based structure make the game an ideal companion for several short sittings rather than one long marathon.
