About BZZZT
BZZZT is a fast-paced "jump-dash-run" platformer made almost single-handedly by Czech developer Karel Matejka (Ko.dll) as a tribute to the classic platformers of his childhood. The game's framing places you in the year 4096, in a top-secret laboratory where Doctor Emily and Professor Norbert have just brought to life a tiny AI-powered robot — ZX8000, no larger than a toaster — to combat the schemes of the evil mad scientist Badbert before he unleashes his nefarious plans on an unsuspecting world.
The gameplay foregrounds precise platforming with intuitive controls. Multiple difficulty levels accommodate everything from casual playthroughs to hardcore expert runs, and an optional permadeath mode is available for players who want the full punishment. Boss fights are positioned as the campaign's setpiece encounters, with rich environments featuring ever-changing gameplay mechanics across levels. Time challenges, both global and friends-only leaderboards, and a built-in survival-style score-chasing layer give the game additional replay incentives beyond a single playthrough.
The presentation is the heart of the project. Insanely detailed pixel art evokes the 80s tech revolution without being stuck in pure nostalgia, and the soundtrack by Martin Linda — creator of Rytmik Ultimate/Studio — anchors the audio side with the kind of catchy chiptune-derived compositions the era specialised in. The combination of solo-developer focus, clear platforming design, and intentional difficulty curve produces the kind of project where the small scale of the team is one of the things that makes the result feel coherent.
