About Lightmatter
Lightmatter is a first-person puzzle game built around a single dangerous rule: any patch of shadow you touch kills you instantly. The whole game is essentially the floor-is-lava played at high stakes, with sunlight, lamps, mirrors, photon beams and movable platforms as your tools for keeping a continuous lit path under your feet from one end of a room to the other.
The story frame is what gives the puzzles their weight. David Bateson — the long-time voice of Agent 47 in Hitman — plays Virgil, the unsettlingly enthusiastic CEO of Lightmatter Technologies. Virgil's pitch to the world is a renewable energy CORE at the heart of every city, drawing sustainable power for millions, and you've arrived as one more body inside the facility helping to build it. The narration commits hard to the wry, slightly menacing register — Virgil's lines slip between corporate-pitch optimism and barely concealed contempt for the test subjects.
The puzzle design is in the lineage of Portal, The Talos Principle and Antichamber — lateral-thinking rather than reflex challenges, with mechanics introduced cleanly and then layered until you're juggling multiple light sources and shadow geometries at once. The whole thing is presented in a stylized comic-style art direction with a gloomy sci-fi atmosphere that fits the script's tone.
