Luck be a Landlord

Luck be a Landlord opens with you holding one coin, your landlord at the door, and a slot machine in front of you. You feed the coin in, the reels spin, and the game starts. From that point on the loop is rent-due, spin, build the deck, rent-due, spin again, until you've earned enough to keep the landlord off your back permanently — or until you can't.

The deckbuilder layer is the depth. Symbols add to the slot machine throughout the run, and each has different effects and interactions with other symbols on the same spin. Combine the right ones and you get exponential payouts; pick the wrong combinations and you starve. Items add another modifier layer on top of the symbols, and the offered items are randomized every run, so build strategies emerge from what the game hands you rather than from a fixed meta.

The game is upfront about what it isn't: there is no real-world currency gambling, no microtransactions, no actual money involved. The slot machine is a game mechanic, not a slot machine. The thematic framing — fighting a terrible landlord, defeating capitalism in the abstract — is part of the joke as much as it's part of the satire.

There is also a dog you can pet, which the game lists as a feature, which is the right call. Screen Reader support was added in an update — toggle it on in Gameplay Settings (or hold F3, the 3 key, or L1 on a controller for five seconds) and highlighted text is sent to the operating system's clipboard for use by external screen reader programs, with keyboard or controller input recommended over mouse in that mode.
