About METAL GEAR SOLID V THE PHANTOM PAIN
The Phantom Pain runs on the Fox Engine and uses it to push the Metal Gear Solid formula into open-world territory for the first time. Big Boss — Snake — wakes in 1984 from a nine-year coma after the events of Ground Zeroes, with a shrapnel-horn embedded in his skull and Mother Base in ruins behind him. The new private army is named Diamond Dogs, and the enemy you're hunting is XOF.
Missions take place across two giant open landscapes: Soviet-occupied Afghanistan and the Angola-Zaire border region during the African Bush War. A real-time day-night cycle and weather system shifts how enemy patrols see and hear you. Mother Base grows into a customizable offshore operation that you staff by extracting soldiers and prisoners from the field via Fulton balloon, and the staff you recruit drives R&D, intel, and combat support back home.
Kojima's team explores the psychology of revenge and the moral cost of private war through long stretches of mostly wordless gameplay, with cutscenes positioned at hinge moments rather than every objective. Buddies — Ocelot, Quiet, D-Dog, D-Horse, D-Walker — accompany you on infiltrations, each changing how the open world reads.
