About Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag
Black Flag turns the Assassin's Creed series toward the Golden Age of Piracy. The year is 1715, the Caribbean is functionally a lawless pirate republic, and the protagonist is Edward Kenway — a charismatic, brutally pragmatic young captain whose ambitions for glory pull him into the ancient war between Assassins and Templars almost by accident. The historical roster sitting around him includes Blackbeard, Calico Jack and Benjamin Hornigold, all rendered as actual figures rather than name-drops.
The naval layer is the game's standout contribution to the series. Edward captains the Jackdaw — a brig he upgrades over the course of the campaign with better cannons, armor, mortars and crew — and full ship-to-ship combat plays out in real time across open water, with weather and waves affecting the fight. Once an enemy ship is sufficiently damaged, you can board it directly, transitioning seamlessly from naval combat to deck-level swordfighting and back. Underwater shipwreck diving, rare-animal hunting through untamed jungles, and treasure hunting in ruined coastal sites round out the open-world activities.
The land map covers over 75 unique locations from Kingston to Nassau to Havana, plus dozens of smaller settlements and hidden coves. Edward fights with the Hidden Blade of the Assassin Order alongside four flintlock pistols and dual cutlasses, which gives him a heavier ranged kit than earlier protagonists in the series. The Steam release includes the game's multiplayer mode with its own pirate-themed character roster and the Game Lab feature that lets players craft custom rule sets.
