About Shadows of Doubt
Shadows of Doubt sets you up as a private intelligence investigator in a hyper-industrialized alternate-1980s metropolis. The city is procedurally generated and fully simulated — every citizen has a name, job, apartment, daily routine, and independent set of behaviors that play out whether you're watching or not. Cases involve murder, theft, blackmail, and other crimes scattered throughout the population, each with its own culprit, clues, and outcome.
The gameplay vocabulary is detective work. You scan fingerprints, check call histories, read private emails, watch CCTV footage, trace receipts back to their points of origin, build evidence boards that link suspects to actions, and eventually formally accuse the perpetrator. Every room of every building can be entered — apartments, bars, hotels, places of work — and your approach can range from strict legality to breaking and entering, hacking, and bribery.
The simulation underneath the genre is the project's defining feature. Citizens go to work, eat at favorite restaurants, return home, see friends, and conduct affairs on schedules they keep regardless of your investigation. Every clue you uncover is a real piece of the simulation, traceable through the same systems the citizens themselves move through. The case logic emerges from this rather than being scripted on top of it.
