Sonic Generations Collection

Sonic Generations is Sega's 20th-anniversary celebration of the franchise, released in 2011 as a deliberate bridge between the Mega Drive-era 2D Sonic and the post-Adventure 3D Sonic. The framing device — a mysterious power opens time holes that pull Sonic and his friends into the past, where he meets a younger version of himself — gives the developers an excuse to put both Classic and Modern Sonic in the same campaign, each running on their own design.

The stage set covers iconic environments from across the franchise's history, each revisited and reimagined twice: once as a Classic 2D side-scroller for Classic Sonic, with the spin-dash and ground-based physics of the originals, and once as a Modern 3D auto-running boost-driven course for Modern Sonic. The selection spans Green Hill Zone, Chemical Plant Zone, Sky Sanctuary, Speed Highway, City Escape, Seaside Hill, Crisis City, Rooftop Run, Planet Wisp and others, each one rebuilt twice from scratch.

The campaign also has you free Sonic's captured friends as you complete levels, unlocking additional challenges with them at your side. Infamous bosses and rivals from across the series return as fights — Metal Sonic, Shadow, Silver and the Egg Dragoon among them — and the Casino Night DLC adds a pinball stage based on the Sonic 2 zone, included free with the Collection edition. The HD presentation gives the older zones an unusual visual richness, and the structure of doing every zone twice in fundamentally different forms remains one of the cleanest celebration packages a long-running franchise has produced.
