About SPORE

SPORE is Will Wright and Maxis's evolutionary epic — a single-player adventure that runs your species through five distinct gameplay stages and lets you skip straight to whichever appeals most. Cell stage handles primordial soup survival. Creature stage is a third-person action-RPG of evolving traits. Tribe stage runs a small RTS. Civilization stage scales up to global conflict. Space stage opens the galaxy.

Each stage carries its own visual style, mechanics and goals, and your choices in earlier stages ripple forward through generations. The decisions that shape your creature's traits — diet, combat ability, social skills — directly influence what you can do in the eras that follow, and the same logic carries up through tribes and civilizations into the eventual interstellar travel that ends the campaign.

The creation tools are the engine's signature. Sculpt creatures part by part, design vehicles for land, sea and air, build cities and starships. SPORE's procedural animation rig adapts to whatever monstrosities you make — a creature with eighteen legs walks correctly without intervention from you. The galaxy slowly fills with content other players have made, accessible to your space-stage explorations.

The game is less a tightly designed strategy title and more a toolbox for creativity wrapped in a long-running progression. SPORE rewards players who want to spend hours in editors rather than chasing optimal builds — and the population of strange creatures it produced across its community is one of the most distinctive pieces of player-driven content in 2000s gaming.
